During our two-week study tour in Geneva, all students engaged with a different neighborhood. The main focus was the 50th anniversary of Swiss women’s suffrage. In my quarter I collected material with which I designed 5 pages. The final product was four different newspaper editions in which six stu-dents each presented their neighborhood and its relationship with the women’s suffrage.

I stayed in the Quartier des Grottes, which is right next to the Geneva train station. This neighborhood was very artistic with many small, odd details that made it incredibly likeable, such as the buildings built in the 1980s that reminded me of the works of Gaudi and Hundertwasser. At the beginning of the quarter, there was a large mural about the already deceased Isabelle Eberhardt who lived in les Grottes in the late 19th century and was not intimidated by the image of women at the time and became a writer. She opened the door to a more self-determined life for many other women. In my newspaper I wrote a fictional text about Isabelle Eberhardt’s last visit to her former neighborhood and had her react to the new architecture and especially to our new society.

A journey through les Grottes, from the perspective of the already deceased Isabelle Eberhardt, who had a major influence on the women's movement in the 1970s.
